Bio: Claire Cannon

In 1997, I earned a B.S. in Psychology at the University of Washington in Seattle. While at the UW, I worked in the lab of Stephen Woods with his (at that time) post-doctoral fellow, Randy Seeley. Both are now directors of the Obesity Research Center at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. I also worked with D. Scott Weigle, a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition at the University of Washington School of Medicine. We published a review article together, and later published a paper on leptin-cholecystokinin (CCK) synergy which set the direction for my graduate thesis.

In 2000, I graduated with a Ph.D. in Neuroscience at Washington State University in Robert (Bob) Ritter’s lab. My thesis work concerned the interaction between leptin and CCK on body weight and feeding behavior.

I was a post-doctoral fellow in Seattle with Richard Palmiter in the Biochemistry department at the University of Washington. Dr. Palmiter is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. In Dr. Palmiter’s lab, I began to work with the dopamine-deficient mouse model, retaining my research interests in obesity and feeding behavior, in addition to developing interests in the related fields of reward and addiction.

During my post-doctoral fellowship in Seattle, I also completed my certification in Biomedical Illustration at the University of Washington.

In 2005, I took a position as an Assistant Professor in the College of Health Sciences, Department of Biomedical Sciences at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In addition to my research, I taught Biochemistry and graduate level Neuroscience until May, 2009.

One of my life’s ambitions is to create the world’s best comic books about neurobiology. Seriously.

Outside the lab, I enjoy racing bikes and making art. I also write for VeloNews as a correspondent for the Wisconsin Off Road Series, America’s largest state mountain bike racing series.
